4 Natural Hair Myths Debunked

There is a science to your natural hair, even if you haven’t quite figured it out yet. The various techniques, products, and “growth serums” you use on your hair work because they play well with your hair’s unique properties.

All of the science in the world, however, can’t stop us from putting our trust in crazy ideas every now and then. Using vaginal cream for hair growth? Sure thing. Inverting our heads every day for an entire week? Why not?

As crazy as these ideas sound, they’re arguably preferable to some of the natural hair myths which are currently circulating around our community. So what are some of these myths? Here are four that need to die quick, painful deaths.

1. Products Make Your Natural Hair Grow Faster

Products don’t make natural hair grow faster, but people have somehow gotten this idea into their heads. Yes, commercial conditioners and serums can help keep our hair moisturized and healthy, but that’s really the extent of their usefulness, though some people have had some success with biotin supplements.

The truth of the matter is that your hair grows as quickly as it grows, and taking good care of it minimizes breakage. You can also fine-tune your diet to strengthen your hair and promote growth, which you should always be doing anyway since you want to be the healthiest version of yourself.

You might also try praying to the hair gods, for all the good it would do.

2. “White” Products Don’t Work For “Black” Hair

Even if you don’t have hair like this, you can still use shampoos and conditioners which are formulated for looser textures.

Aussie Moist and Tresemme might have been designed for straight, silky hair, but the natural hair community has it on record that they work just fine for afro-textured hair.

This is probably because your hair properties – not your curl pattern – determine how effective a product will be for your natural hair. In other words, products loaded with shea butter won’t necessarily work on your type 4 hair just because every other natural with your hair type says so.

3. Heat Damage Is Reversible

Heat damage isn’t reversible. Period. Some women claim that they’ve been able to reverse their heat damage, but the science doesn’t lie.

There really isn’t much more to say here. This myth just needs to disappear. Forever.

4. Your Hair Isn’t Defined Becuase You Just Haven’t Found The Right Products

Out of the four natural hair myths on this list, this is arguably the most damaging one. It’s this myth that keeps black women buying curl cream after curl cream to “fix” their kinks. It also propagates hair texture discrimination.

While hair products can certainly help define kinks and coils, they simply cannot create something that is not there. Your 4c kinks will not become 4a spirals if you apply copious amounts of curl activator, and that’s perfectly alright.

Because your natural hair journey isn’t about having defined, bouncy coils. It’s about coming to accept and love whatever you happen to have on top of your head.

I’m not sure if it’s a myth but people seem to believe if a product is labelled specifically for a certain hair type, it will not work for others.For example the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie is labelled for really curly hair and many people with kinkier/tighter coiled strands stray away from it. Products do exactly what they say they will on any hair type, you may just not like the result. I have recommended products to others with more tightly coiled strands than I have and they’ve worked soooo well.
